It was then independent colleges in the boroughs – Ira Glasser: I went to what's now CUNY in New York. Nico Perrino: And where did you go to college? Ira Glasser: Yes, I was, and it wasn't my passion, it was never my passion, but I was just always an honor student, a straight A student in high school, phi beta kappa in college. On the other hand, this was the 1950s and, and because of Sputnik and the increasing cold war competition, there was beginning to be tremendous emphasis in school on science and mathematics and physics and if you were good at it, it was very hard to avoid being trapped into it. I was – I sort of had – I wanted to change the world, I mean, I was just, if anything, I thought of social criticism, I thought of, I thought of dissenting from this or that or the other thing, and I'm taking about from the time I had any consciousness at all, from 14, 15, 16, and throughout college, but there was – you were enormously discouraged by vocational considerations by any adult that you talked to, and so you had to really be driven and be willing to look at a bleak future if you wanted to pursue that. You can't – things like, oh, I want to be a jazz musician, right, and so, so there was, there was – or else you could go teach, and I wasn't particularly interested in teaching. It was, it was, well, most people who try to do that don't succeed. Well, the only way to earn a living is to be a writer, and nobody really knew what that meant and it was sort of like deciding to become an actor or something. Ira Glasser: I would have called them probably social issues, I would have called them philosophical issues, I would have called them political issues, but the kinds of things that I was mostly interested in you would find in – if you found it all in school, you would find it in courses, in sociology courses or literature courses or philosophy courses or history courses, but nobody knew what that was, and when I was a kid, if you ever said that's what you were interested in, the response you got from any adult you said it to, your parents, your uncles, your aunts, your guidance counselors, anybody, was, well, yeah, but you can't – what are you – how are you gonna earn a living? Nico Perrino: What would you have called them? I didn't – I wouldn't have called them civil liberties when I was 15 or 16 or 18 or 19 – Ira Glasser: Well, that's a very long story actually, but in the sum of it, those were the issues that I was interested in. Nico Perrino: So, I want to ask you, you have a background in mathematics, why civil liberties work then? Nico Perrino: Ira, thanks for coming on the show. When the chips are down I would want Steve Tasker on my team every time. Tasker is extremely popular in Buffalo and a member of the Bills Wall of Fame. /rebates/2f&. In his career as a gunner, Tasker had 204 tackles and 7 blocked punts. He’s the only special teams player ever to be named the MVP of the Pro Bowl. Steve Tasker played in the Super Bowl 4x, was a first team all pro 5x, and played in the Pro Bowl 7x. Former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly regards Tasker as the greatest special teams player of all time and a hall of fame candidate. He also had 204 special teams tackles, seven forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, and one safety. NFL Network named Tasker as the 9th greatest player not enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. On special teams, Tasker had 32 kick returns for 335 yards and 24 punt returns for 398 yards. Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.įUBAR is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from Thursday April 20th.Steve Tasker has been a hall of fame semi-finalist 8x and has been snubbed every time. I’ll see how FUBAR gets received, but for now, two episodes is enough, even though the second one does introduce Aprana Brielle into the cast as the nerdy Tina Mukerji. Perhaps it was just lightning in a bottle that hasn’t been captured since, including now. Reportedly, they never made a sequel because after 2001, they couldn’t paint terrorists in a light that would find the situation “funny”, but plenty of TV shows and films have, so I think they just couldn’t get a script together. I can’t help but compare this to True Lies, and both the script and direction were so much better, there. The 5-9, 181 pound Tasker, who hails from Kansas, must have seemed like a tornado to many opposing players when they met them helmet-to-helmet. Plus, for the script, the jokes don’t exactly hit the mark such as when Dad and daughter go into a therapy session, even though they started off well when Emma told Daddy her husband is a kindergarten teacher, to which he comments: “Those painting don’t finger themselves(!)” Once it sets out its stall, it does seem to take a fair while to get going again, and then gets very predictable. So, can he get her out with the WMD? Will she show him up along the way? Well, there’s 8 episodes to find out, and so far, I’ve seen two. With the end of his modern era eligibility, Tasker was in the senior category for the first time. He needs to go to Guyana, pretend to be ‘Finn Hoss’ in order to retrieve some WMD from a baddie called Boro ( Gabriel Luna – The Last Of Us) and extract CIA operative codenamed ‘Panda’, but is introduced to the biggest badass also in the area… a woman who will beat any man about the (boxing) ring… yes, Emma. PHOENIX The Buffalo Bills suddenly have a big hole to fill on their offensive coaching staff. So, back to the main plot, and for long and complex reasons, Harry. It’s not, but I thought – maybe it’s similar? Well, he plays Luke Brunner, who’s just about to retire from the CIA, after a long career culminating in freeing someone of their diamonds, but like Al Pacino in The Godfather Part III, he thought he was out, but they’re pulling him back in… for one more job.īut before we get to that, he was looking forward to time with his family, including daughter Emma ( Monica Barbaro – Top Gun: Maverick) and ex-wife Tally ( Fabiana Udenio), but even in his advanced years, he still illegally rides a motorbike with no helmet on… However, since he may as well be Harry Tasker, he’s obviously been through more dangerous escapades in his career. Originally, I was led to believe this was a continuation of True Lies. FUBAR is Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s first ever TV series, since he normally makes action film after action film. In all seriousness, this could be a good move by Treyarch, as a lot of what made the last game so epic was its cast of supporting NPC players, and English stereotyping aside, the single-player campaign wouldnt have been the same without them. This may at first seem like a weird move to make. Weird then is that the developers chose to take a step backwards and set World at War once again in that lovable WW2 era. We just got back on a 4 day camping trip Devils Fork on Greers Ferry Lake. The photo is the wife straighten up the bedding. When I open up the tent I close the deflate valve & open the inflate valve why I finish setting up camp (hour or so) I usually give about 10 pumps with the hand pump & the mattress is pretty much were the comfort level for the wife & I like it. You pull the deflate valve open & fold up the tent. I had a member "here" tell me about this Exped mattress as another member from American Adventurist too. We read all kinds of complaints about the RTT mattresses being extremely uncomfortable. You will wake up (least I & my wife did) with aching joints like we never faced before. It's not just Smittybilt's mattress's most of the RTT's mattress's are this way. I'll assure you, you will replace this mattress in time. I can not say enough about this mattress, we both wife & I sleep like were sleeping on our home Tempur-Pedic mattress. You will notice the mattress isn't comfortable. Its concept is simple: You simply fill the globe-looking contraption with clumping litter as you would any regular, manual litter box, and it rotates a few minutes after each use, sifting away any clean litter back into the globe and dumping any used litter and waste into a dedicated waste bin configured into its base - pretty much like a drawer you pulled open and emptied every week or so. There are countless products dedicated to making litter box chores easier and more sustainable for pet owners - from color-changing litter that can detect the health of your pet to flushable litter made of walnut shells that are safe for apartment plumbing - but few can compare to freedom from scooping and odors that the self-cleaning Litter-Robot offered. As many pet owners will attest, cleaning out the litter box is one of the least appealing aspects of having a cat, especially for one that’s kept - and therefore, poops - indoors. The Litter-Robot is an automatic, self-cleaning litter box for cats. I was already a snack and toy wench, so I had to draw the line somewhere. And really, is there any job more thankless than manually cleaning up something else’s poop for the rest of eternity? ( No, there isn’t, my furball smirks at me from her tower, all rent-exempt and worry-free). Aside from the usual benefits much rhapsodized upon its initial, revolutionary release - no more poop-scooping or messy liner replacing - it also meant that I could do away with having an eyesore of an actual litter box in my living room and minimized having to frequently replace kitty litter, too.ĭespite the expense - something I initially balked at - nothing really beats the convenience of having a cat toilet that virtually does all of the (dreaded) work for you. I’ve had The Litter-Robot 3 since I got my cat in 2019, and suffice to say, it has changed my life. The Product on TrialĮunice Lucero-Lee, cat overlord wench, poop-scooping enemy The Brief There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder - do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do. “Cathedrals, castles and ships-those were the most complicated things that humans had built up until that time,” says Nucup. The 20 sailors on the Niña and the 26 crewing the Pinta would have been constantly engaged with adjusting the rigging, trimming the sails, inspecting for leaks and plugging them with spongy scraps of old rope called oakum. Work was relentless on any 15th-century ship. “You’re trying to stay out of the way of the sailors who are working. “If you’re a sailor on a caravel, you’re living on the deck and sleeping on the deck,” says Marc Nucup, public historian at The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia. Unlike the Santa Maria, which at least had tiny cabins where sailors could sleep between eight-hour shifts, the Niña and Pinta had a single small deck at the rear of the ship with only one cramped cabin reserved for the captain. Life aboard a short ship like the Niña or Pinta would have been absurdly crowded and uncomfortable. Yet the main advantage of the Spanish caravel, namely its compact size, was also its greatest disadvantage. The bulkier Santa Maria, which was a 110-ton cargo ship called a nau, ran aground on Christmas Day 1492 and had to be abandoned. This proved critical when Columbus needed to navigate the shallow island coastlines near modern-day Cuba. Their lightweight design and rounded bottom meant that they rode high in the water. Small caravels like the Niña and Pinta could only carry between 40 and 50 tons and were crewed by fewer than 30 sailors each. Small Ships Offered Advantages-But Also Discomforts The new position allowed for far greater control. In the 14th-century caravels popular in the Mediterranean, the rudder was still on the side, says Castro, like Viking ships. In addition to their versatile rigging options, 15th-century caravels moved the rudder to the rear center of the ship. That rigging combination made ships like the Niña and the Pinta some of the best sailing vessels of their time. The versatile caravel could speed south along the coast and easily return to shore against the wind.įor Columbus’s maiden journey, he used a Spanish update to the caravel known as the caravela redonda, a three-masted ship where the first two masts were rigged with conventional square sails for open-ocean speed, and a third was rigged with a lateen sail for coastal maneuverability. The lateen-rigged caravels were critical in the Portuguese voyages to sub-Saharan African, where strong coastal winds blow north to south. “You can point the bow of the caravel with an angle of just 20 degrees off the wind and still get enough lift on the outer edge of the sail to propel forward.” “Lateen sails are almost like wings,” says Castro. Luis Filipe Viera de Castro, a nautical archeologist at Texas A&M University, says that the earlier Portuguese caravels, known as the caravela latina, were rigged with lateen (triangular) sails that hung at 45-degree angle to the deck. Though only two of Columbus’s ships ended up being caravels, Isabella’s decree speaks to the popularity of the vessel during the 15th-century “ Age of Discovery.” Starting with Portuguese explorations of the African coast in the mid-1400s, caravels were prized for their sleek, lightweight hull and their uncanny ability to sail into the wind. Caravels Were Cutting Edge in the 15th Century The caravels of Christopher Columbus, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. When the royal decree went out in 1492 from Queen Isabella of Spain to fund Columbus’s first voyage, it read, “By these presents, we dispatch the noble man Christoforus Colón with three equipped caravels over the Ocean Seas toward the regions of India for certain reasons and purposes.” READ MORE: Why Columbus Day Courts Controversy on October 12 that land had been sighted.Ĭolumbus hadn’t found a western route to India, of course, but his success in crossing the Atlantic was due in large part to the ships he chose for the perilous voyage, particularly the diminutive Niña and Pinta, which were a speedy type of ship called a caravel. With the men close to mutiny against their “foreign” captain, Columbus was about to turn back when the cry went out at 2 a.m. The Santa Maria, Columbus’s flagship, was a larger, heavier cargo ship.įor 35 days, Columbus and his crew of 86 Spanish sailors sailed westward searching for a passage to China and India. Two of the ships, the Niña and Pinta, were tiny by today’s standards-only 50 to 70 feet from bow to stern-but prized for their speed and maneuverability. On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his crew set sail from the port of Palos in southern Spain on three vessels: la Santa Clara (Niña), la Pinta and la Santa Gallega (Santa Maria). Among the Pseudomonas species, a high level of resistance was recorded for ceftazidime (50%), aztreonam (50%), and doripenem (50%). baumannii isolates were resistant to aminoglycosides and colistin, respectively, while all the isolates were susceptible to meropenem. cepacia isolates from cancer patients may be slightly different, with increased susceptibility to some antibiotics, especially piperacillin, piperacillin-tazobactam, and cefepime. However, according to literature, the antibiogram of B. cepacia isolates are susceptible are meropenem, ceftazidime, ceftibuten, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim. The 2010 Sanford Guide recommends co-trimoxazole as the treatment of choice for these infections. The in vitro anti-microbial susceptibility of Burkholderia cepacia isolates revealed 92% resistance to meropenem, while the susceptibility to co-trimoxazole was 100%. Prabash et al., in 2010, analyzed the blood cultures of cancer patients (neutropenic and non-neutropenic) and found that non-fermenters comprised a majority of the Gram-negative bacilli isolated (62.24%), with Pseudomonas (30.37%) and Acinetobacter sp. Out of the total Gram-negative bacilli, the NFGNB in our study were 63.5% (40/63), and B. In this study, NFGNB were isolated from 4.9% of the total blood samples received for the culture. A high level of resistance against the first- and second-line antibiotics was noted. The antibiotic susceptibility results are given in Table 1, which shows the percentage of resistant isolates. Acinetobacter baumannii (20%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12.5%), Pseudomonas stutzeri (2.5%), Alcaligenes faecalis (2.5%), and Sphingomonas paucimobilis (2.5%) were the other NFGNB isolated from the blood stream infections. Forty, out of 63 (63.5%) Gram-negative organisms were NFGNB, out of which Burkholderia cepacia (60%) was the predominant isolate. Sixty-three (36.6%) were Gram-negative and 108 (62.7%) were Gram-positive organisms, while one isolate was fungus ( Candida sp.). However, only 172 yielded pathogenic bacteria on subculture. The antibiotic susceptibility results were expressed as susceptible, intermediate or resistant, according to the criteria of the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M100-S23 (2013).Īmong 815 total samples received for blood culture, 249 bottles were flagged as positive in the BacT Alert 3D. The VITEK ®2 Compact (C) system (bioMerieux, North Carolina, USA) was used to identify NFGNB up to the species level, using the Gram-negative Identification (GN-ID) 21341 card, and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) was done using the AST 281 card. From the positive bottles, the subcultures were performed on MacConkey agar and blood agar. Blood culture was performed in BacT/Alert blood culture bottles (bioMerieux, Durham, North Carolina, USA). In an attempt to recognize the antibiotic resistance and prevalence pattern among NFGNB associated with BSIs in cancer patients, a prospective study was conducted over a period of one year from July 2013 to June 2014, at a tertiary care cancer institute in North India. NFGNB have a varied isolation rate, ranging from 2.18 to 45.9%, as observed from various clinical samples. High intrinsic resistance of NFGNB to antimicrobial compounds makes the treatment of BSIs caused by them difficult and expensive. Blood stream infections (BSI) caused by NFGNB are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. NFGNB can cause a significant number of infections, ranging from superficial to deep-seated and disseminated infections in immunocompromised hosts, neutropenic patients, patients with cystic fibrosis, patients on mechanical ventilation and indwelling catheters, and patients undergoing invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) are a group of organisms that either do not utilize glucose as a source of energy or utilize it oxidatively.
